Things to do in Hamilton, Ontario
Hamilton sits at the western tip of the Niagara Escarpment on Lake Ontario, about 80 kilometres from Niagara Falls, roughly an hour by the QEW toward Toronto.
It is an industrial harbour city, not a resort town, and its draws are different from the falls: the Royal Botanical Gardens (over 1,100 hectares, free to walk many trailed sections, paid admission for the display gardens), long stretches of the Bruce Trail along the escarpment brow, and a cluster of waterfalls at the escarpment edge, including Webster's Falls and Tews Falls at Spencer Gorge and Albion Falls in the city's east end.
Dundurn Castle, an 1830s villa overlooking the harbour, runs guided tours most of the year. None of these are the Niagara Falls themselves, despite the shared escarpment and the confusingly similar name; treat Hamilton as a separate half-day or day stop on the Toronto route, not a substitute.
