Following the Niagara River
The Niagara River runs 58 kilometres from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, dropping 99 metres along the way and draining all four upper Great Lakes, a watershed of roughly 684,000 square kilometres.
From Fort Erie the river is broad and slow before it enters the 11-kilometre gorge, where the Whirlpool churns in a basin 518 by 365 metres.
Past Queenston the water calms for good, and the Niagara Parkway follows this quiet stretch for 55 kilometres to the river's mouth at Lake Ontario, where Old Fort Niagara and Fort George face each other across the water. A drive covering the whole river, gorge to lake, takes about an hour without stops.
